Police raid ritualist’s den, discover 20 mummified bodies in Benin

Police Operatives from Edo State Police Command on Wednesday, 17th August, 2022, raided suspected ritual shrine at Asoro slope, off Ekenhua road, Uzebu quarters, Benin city and discovered 20 mummified bodies.

In a Statement, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Jennifer U. Iwegbu said the operation followed a credible information at the Command’s disposal that some corpses were discovered in a building at Asoro slope, off Ekenhua road, Uzebu quarters, Benin city.

Iwegbu said operatives of the command immediately swung into action and mobilized to the scene.

She said at the scene, three suspects- Chimaobi Okoewu ‘M’ and Oko Samuel ‘M’ both of Afikpo in Ebonyi and Gideon Sunday ‘M’ of Akwa-Ibom State- were arrested while others fled.

Iwegbu added that an intensive effort was ongoing to arrest the other fleeing suspects.

She said 15 mummified male corpses, three mummified female corpses and two mummified children corpses were discovered at the scene.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Abutu Yaro, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of state CID to carry out a discreet investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the discovered corpses.

He therefore enjoined the public to be calm as the command would continue to ensure the safety of all law-abiding citizens and those residing in Edo state.
