The Etsako West Local Government Security Task Force has arrested some individuals allegedly involved in the importation and sale of contaminated donkey meat at the Uzairue International Market abattoir in Edo State.
The suspects were reportedly apprehended on Monday during a security operation following concerns over the safety of meat being supplied to unsuspecting members of the public.
According to a report from the Etsako West media office, the suspects were allegedly found in possession of chemicals reportedly used for embalming corpses, which they were suspected of using as preservatives to prolong the shelf life of the imported donkey meat.
The development has raised serious public health concerns, given the potential dangers associated with consuming meat allegedly treated with chemicals not approved for food preservation.
During preliminary questioning, the arrested individuals reportedly confessed to importing the donkey meat and displayed documents they claimed were customs papers authorising the importation.
However, the authenticity and legality of the documents, as well as the actual composition of the chemicals and their alleged application to the meat, remain matters for investigation by the relevant authorities.
Acting on the directive of the Executive Chairman of Etsako West Local Government, Hon. Romeo Alaoji Omoike, the suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The incident underscores the importance of effective food safety monitoring, particularly in public markets where thousands of residents depend on meat products for daily consumption.
Authorities are expected to establish the source of the imported meat, determine whether the alleged preservatives were used, identify the individuals involved in the supply chain and ascertain whether any public health regulations were violated.
