‎The Owan West Legislative Council has impeached its Majority Leader, Hon. Goodluck Aigboje of Isewede Ward, barely two months after the inauguration of the House.

‎

‎According to a legislative report from the council, seven out of the eleven ward councillors signed for the removal of the Majority Leader.

‎

‎Hon. Aigboje was subsequently replaced by Hon. Abiodun Ahonsi, following the vote by the majority of members.

‎

‎The impeachment, which many residents consider shocking, took place at the council headquarters in Sabongida-Ora, Owan West Local Government Area, on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

‎

‎The development has sparked debate across the local government, with residents asking how a legislator who was elected to represent the people and deliver democratic dividends could be removed so early without a clear record of performance or failure.

‎

‎Critics of the action argue that two months is too short a period to assess the performance of any legislator, especially at the grassroots level where legislative duties are largely oversight, lawmaking and representation, not direct execution of projects.

‎

‎Others, however, insist that leadership is about trust, teamwork and adherence to the rules of the House, and that once a leader loses the confidence of his colleagues, the House has the constitutional power to remove and replace him.

‎

‎Political observers note that the impeachment may have more to do with internal power struggles, party interests and leadership tussles than with the actual performance of the removed Majority Leader.

‎

‎They warn that frequent impeachments at the local government level undermine stability, distract from governance, and deny the electorate the effective representation they voted for.

‎

‎Meanwhile, supporters of the new Majority Leader, Hon. Abiodun Ahonsi, say the change was necessary to restore order and ensure smooth legislative business in the council.

‎

‎As reactions continue to trail the impeachment, stakeholders have called on the councillors to prioritize the interests of the people of Owan West above personal and political differences, and to allow the House to focus on its legislative responsibilities.
