‎BENIN CITY – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has come under criticism from stakeholders across the state over the appointment of Engr. Kelvin Ovanbor Aigbe as Special Adviser on Security.

‎

‎The appointment was announced by the Secretary to the Edo State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., in a statement dated August 10, 2026.

‎

‎According to the profile attached to the announcement, Aigbe is described as a Nigerian entrepreneur, aviation professional, philanthropist and political leader from Edo State.

‎

‎He studied Analytical and Industrial Chemistry at the University of Benin and later underwent professional training as an Aerospace Engineer at Emirates Aviation University in Dubai, with practical experience at Emirates Airline and Air Arabia.

‎

‎He also worked as a Sales Engineer with Reliance Middle East Aviation and Marine Services before venturing into business.

‎

‎His business interests span hospitality, healthcare, retail and international services. He currently serves as MD/CEO of KASH Hotels, Benin City, Burjuman International Ltd and ZEAMS Royal Care Pharmacy and Supermarket, with operations in Edo State and Abuja.

‎

‎Several respondents who spoke on the appointment questioned the suitability of an engineer with a background in hospitality and business for the security portfolio.

‎

‎They argued that the position of Special Adviser on Security requires a core professional with training and experience in security matters, and not a civilian with no known background in security.

‎

‎The critics urged the governor to redeploy Aigbe to other areas where his expertise may be more relevant, and to appoint a qualified security professional to the role.

‎Some respondents also described the appointment as politically motivated, saying the security adviser position “should not be traded for political interest” and that the decision amounts to a “mockery of the security adviser office.”
