Benin City — The Edo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) on Saturday, 25 April 2026, concluded its ward, local government, and state congresses with the election of Engr. Michael Oshiobugie as State Chairman.
The congresses produced a 24-member State Executive Committee drawn from the three senatorial districts: Edo South — 9 members, Edo North — 8, and Edo Central — 7.
According to party officials, the officers were elected by affirmation. The elected LGA officers, delegates, and stakeholders across the senatorial districts administered the process.
The State Chairman was subsequently elected by the newly elected LGA chairmen through endorsement and voting Engr. Oshiobugie emerged after securing the endorsement of 13 out of 18 LGA chairmen.
The congress timeline was as follows: Ward congresses held across 192 wards on 23 April 2026 at designated ward centers and the state secretariat, administered by the party’s legal officer. LGA congresses were conducted on 24 April 2026 across the 18 LGAs at approved venues, supervised by the Electoral Monitoring and Endorsement Committee. The state congress was held on 25 April 2026 across Edo South, Edo Central, and Edo North.
Inaugurating the new executives, the National Officer in charge of Edo State congresses, Dr. Kunle Ademola, conveyed the directive of the National Chairman, Sen. Nenadi Usman, to ensure a smooth and credible process.
He commended the peaceful conduct and urged the new team to work toward strengthening the party for electoral success.
In his acceptance speech, Engr. Oshiobugie thanked members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to lead with unity, discipline, and commitment to deliver the party in the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, the Labour Party has elected Sen Nenadi Usman as National Chairman and Rt. Hon. Iheanacho Obioma as National Secretary.
Others members elected are, Mrs. Nike Oriola, Deputy National Chairman, Ken Eluma Asogwa, National Publicity Secretary; Mrs. Oluchi Oparah, National Organising Secretary; Comrade Anslem Eragbe, National Financial Secretary; Hilda Dokubo, National Women Leader.
In her acceptance speech, Senator Usman expressed gratitude to party members for the confidence reposed in her and pledged to reposition the party for greater success. She commended the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, for his exemplary leadership, and assured members that she would not let the party down in her new capacity. She also reaffirmed her commitment to fostering unity, peace, and reconciliation within the party ahead of the next general elections.
In his remarks, Governor Alex Otti charged the newly elected National Working Committee to provide purposeful leadership and strengthen the party’s structures nationwide.
The newly elected National Working Committee was thereafter sworn in and has assumed office.
