Sabongidda-Ora — Former Chairman of Owan West Local Government and sports journalist, Hon. Frank Illaboya, has formally declared his intention to contest the Edo State House of Assembly seat for Owan West Constituency ahead of the 2027 elections.
The seat is currently held by Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, who joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) through defection. Agbebaku’s re-election campaign is anchored on retaining the Speakership for Owan West.
Illaboya’s declaration, held at the APC Secretariat in Sabongidda-Ora, was well attended by party executives from the 11 wards in the LGA, as well as party members.
Addressing the gathering, Illaboya said he was not surprised by the turnout, noting that Owan West remains an APC stronghold.
He said his bid was driven by a “deepening interest” to ensure the local government is not only well represented in the House but also enjoys the real dividends of democracy.
Reaffirming his commitment to the growth of the area, Illaboya commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his “unwavering stance” on the state’s rapid development within just over a year in office, and for uniting the party.
“I am not afraid to take up challenges. It is the turn of Owan West to get it right, and the destination is the Edo State House of Assembly,” he said.
He also praised APC apex leader in Owan West, Chief Lucky Ohimai, alias Tarex, for uniting executives and members and for driving the party’s growth in the area.
Responding, Owan West APC Chairman, Hon. Frank Davids, commended Illaboya for joining the race and assured all aspirants of equal opportunities. He urged them to canvass with decorum, avoid calumny, and engage ward executives and members. He noted that it was not yet clear whether the ticket would be by consensus or primary.
Ward 10 Chairman, Hon. Monday Jeremiah, appreciated the party leadership under Chief Ohimai for uniting the party and appealed to executives to give Illaboya the opportunity, citing his “creditable performance” as council chairman.
Dignitaries present included Hon. Ojo Asein, Hon. MacDonald Obasuke, Hon. George Amani, Council Secretary Hon. Coker, the Edo North Senatorial Woman Leader, and traditional chiefs, among others.
