‎BENIN CITY – The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from office to preempt impeachment proceedings, bringing to an end a tenure that began in 2023.
‎
‎Following his resignation, Hon. Yekini Idaiyi representing Akoko-Edo II Constituency, was sworn in as the new Speaker.
‎
‎Before his emergence as Speaker, Agbebaku served as Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the 7th Assembly, Hon. Marcus Onobun. He had earlier represented Owan West Constituency in the House between 2007 and 2011 before returning in 2023 and becoming Speaker.
‎
‎In a related development, the Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Ibhamawu, also resigned following intense pressure from members of the House.
‎
‎Both the former Speaker and Majority Leader were subsequently suspended indefinitely during a brief plenary session that lasted less than 30 minutes.
‎The House also elected new principal officers.
‎
‎ They are Hon. Ojiezele Osezua Sunday (Esan South-East Constituency) – Majority Leader
Hon. Inegbeboh Ojie Eugene (Esan North-East I) – Deputy Majority Leader
‎Hon. Natasha Osawaru Irobosa (Egor Constituency, NDC) – Minority Leader
‎The leadership overhaul has effectively reconfigured the power structure of the 8th Edo State House of Assembly.
