Young Nigerians seeking careers in technology have been encouraged to combine Artificial Intelligence, AI, skills with deep knowledge of real-world industries to remain relevant in the rapidly evolving digital economy.
The advice was given during Bincom Dev Centre’s virtual ICT Career Talk themed “Agentic AI: The Next Frontier of Tech Careers,” featuring Founder of SurfSpot Communications Limited, Engr. Akohamen Emmanuel Agenmonmen, and IT project and product management professional, Quazim Adeola Ogungbayi.
Speaking at the session, Agenmonmen explained the difference between generative AI and agentic AI, describing generative AI as a tool that creates content while agentic AI can plan and execute a series of tasks within defined limits. He stressed that human oversight remains essential for the quality, cost and outcome of AI-driven work.
He noted that the growing opportunities in AI extend beyond coding to include AI orchestration, workflow engineering, AI-native software development, safety and governance, as well as industry-specific AI applications.
Ogungbayi urged aspiring professionals to begin with simple automated workflows, such as organizing emails or drafting responses for human review, while learning APIs and workflow design before introducing greater autonomy into AI systems.
He also advised learners to dedicate about 90 days to building practical skills within their chosen field and emphasized the importance of governance measures, including limited system permissions, audit trails and human review as AI agents gain access to sensitive operations.
Responding to questions on data privacy, both speakers called on individuals and organizations to exercise caution when sharing personal information with AI platforms, insisting that responsible access controls and accountability should guide every AI deployment.
