IHIEVBE – The recent lifting of suspensions and bans imposed on members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Owan East by the Chairman of the Local Government, Hon. Ernest Oyaole Aitalegbe, has sparked controversy among party members.
The controversy centers on whether the council chairman has the power to reverse disciplinary actions taken by the party leadership.
The Chairman announced the lifting of the suspensions during his victory thanksgiving service held in Ihievbe community
Emphasizing reconciliation and unity, Aitalegbe declared that his administration would operate as a government for all, irrespective of political differences.
He therefore announced the immediate lifting of all suspensions and bans against APC members in Owan East, urging party leaders, stakeholders and members to put past disagreements behind them and work together for the progress and development of the Local Government.
Recall that the party had suspended Dr. Festus Owu and Aslem Imogighe a few months ago.
The event was attended by all ward councillors, APC leaders, party stakeholders and supporters across Owan East.
Party Leaders Fault Chairman’s Action
Some party leaders, however, said the chairman lacked the power to lift suspensions imposed by the party.
They argued that if a decision was to be taken to lift the suspension of party members, the announcement should come from the LGA Party Chairman and not the LGA Council Chairman.
Aitalegbe Outlines Agenda
In his address, Aitalegbe outlined key priorities of his administration to include security, electricity, infrastructure, healthcare, transportation, agriculture, youth empowerment and political reconciliation.
On electricity, the Chairman promised to engage relevant authorities and stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the power challenges affecting homes, businesses and economic activities across Owan East.
On security, he disclosed that two Sports Utility Vehicles, SUVs, have been provided to support security operations. He added that regular strategic meetings will be held to tackle kidnapping and other criminal activities in collaboration with security agencies.
On infrastructure and governance, Aitalegbe promised the rehabilitation of the dilapidated Local Government Secretariat, settlement of outstanding obligations to past political office holders as well as retired and serving council workers, and the reconstruction of the Chairman’s Lodge, the design of which he said has already been completed.
