NPC Ditches Paper Forms, Launches Digital Birth, Death Registration in Edo

The National Population Commission, NPC has commenced full digital registration of births and deaths across Nigeria, ending the use of manual paper forms.
The Edo State launch of the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics, ECRVS system was performed in Benin City by the NPC Federal Commissioner for Edo, Dr. Tony Aiyejina in the presence of Development Partners.
Dr. Aiyejina said digital registration took effect nationwide on July 1, 2026, and is now operational in all 36 states and the FCT.
He added that Edo State has equipped registration centres, trained personnel and structures in place for seamless service delivery.
He urged parents, guardians, healthcare providers, traditional rulers, religious and community leaders to ensure every birth and death is promptly registered under the new system.
According to him, all registrations will now be processed electronically through the Virtual Records Platform, making the process faster, more secure, transparent and reliable. For the first time, Nigerians abroad can also access a secure self-service portal to register.
Dr. Aiyejina described the reform as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu aimed at strengthening digital governance and public service delivery.
“Civil registration protects identity and ensures every Nigerian is counted in national development,” he said.
