Edo Women Affairs, Partners Organise Free Medical Outreach in Benin City

The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in collaboration with the Braimoh Empowerment Foundation and the Healthcare and Support Initiatives (NCSI), Catholic Archdiocese of Benin, has organised a one-day free medical outreach to improve access to healthcare for residents.

The outreach, held at the Edo State Secretariat premises, Benin City, provided free health screenings for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, malaria, tuberculosis, high blood pressure and other health conditions.

Speaking at the event, the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, said the initiative was designed to ease financial burden of healthcare on families, particularly women, children and other vulnerable members of society.

She described the exercise as the first medical outreach organised under her leadership as Commissioner and said it aligned with the SHINE Agenda of Governor Monday Okpebholo, particularly its commitment to the health and well-being of Edo residents.

Hon. Abdallah urged residents to take advantage of the free services and called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, community heads, and women and youth groups to encourage greater participation in future health programmes.

She expressed appreciation to the medical personnel, partner organisations and other stakeholders for their contributions towards the success of the initiative.

Speaking on behalf of the Braimoh Empowerment Foundation, Mr. Felix Ahmed Braimoh explained that the foundation was established in memory of his late father, Braimoh Musa Aidorolo. He said the outreach was organised with the Governor’s approval in partnership with the Ministry and other stakeholders to bring essential healthcare services closer to the people.

He added that the exercise featured professional doctors, laboratory scientists and technicians, alongside free medications for beneficiaries, including those requiring treatment for abnormal blood pressure. He also explained that samples would be collected for tuberculosis testing, with follow-up care provided for persons whose results required further attention.

In her remarks, Rev. Sister Augustina Okoroafor, speaking on behalf of NCSI, commended the Ministry and its partners for bringing healthcare services closer to the people. She emphasised the importance of preventive healthcare, early detection of illnesses and collaboration among government, faith-based organisations and other stakeholders in promoting healthier communities.

The Commissioner, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Joy Ihensekhien, formally kick-started the outreach by undergoing medical checks, demonstrating the importance of regular health screening.

The initiative underscores the Edo State Government’s commitment to improving public health through strategic partnerships and accessible healthcare services.
