Edo residents pray against Night inauguration of Edo Assembly

With the conclusion of the swearing in of president Bola Tinubu in Abuja and that of the State governors across some of the states of the federation, attention has been shifted to the states for the inauguration of state Houses of Assembly.

In Edo State, residents will be praying and hoping that the macabre drama which played out during the inauguration of the 9th assembly in which the House was allegedly inaugurated in the wee hours of the night does not repeat itself.

The scene tagged inauguration saw handful of the Assembly members-elect, still dressed in casual kniikker , went viral as well as sent cold shivers down the spine of many.

The ceremony often heralds the birth of the legislative session and represents a major public function that attracts top government officials, traditional institution, as well as the friends, family members, and well-wishers of the assembly members .

Edo residents were denied the pomp and pageantry associated with the formal proclamation ceremony the last time as a result of the intrigues and power-play which pitched the major political actors against each other.

A keen follower of Edo State politics who craved anonymity so as not to attract undue attention to himself said he is hopeful there will not be a repeat of the 2019 episode when what was tagged “inauguration” took place in the “dead of the night” with the few assembly members held “hostage” by the agents of the executive.

He however submitted that there is some glimmer of hope that the next inauguration will be conducted in a convivial atmosphere and in a way as to edify the state government.
