The former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobu is in the intensive maintenance unit of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, where he is said to be receiving treatment as a result of the ghastly accident involving his convoy along the unmotorable section of the Auchi – Ekpoma express road.
Close aides of the former Speaker disclosed that he sustained fatal injuries in the accident which necessitated his being rushed to the Irrua Specialist Hospital, Ekpoma for treatment.
However, due to the severity of the injuries he sustained, he was consequently transferred to the UBTH and was admitted straight into the ICU to enable the doctors monitor his recovery.
The former Speaker is currently representing the Esan West/Igueben federal constituency in the House of Representatives.
A close associate of the former Speaker who did not want his name in print described the scene as “gory”, adding it was the grace of God that preserved the life of the former Speaker otherwise the notorious road would have claimed another victim
According to the source, the former Speaker was traveling in a convoy when the accident occurred.
The SUV conveying him was said to be at top speed and suddenly ran into one of the numerous deep craters on the road and consequently lost control. His SUV was said to have somersaulted severally before coming to a halt.
: However, a media aide to the former Speaker, Mrs. Ebojele, in a bid to douse growing public concerns about the safety of her principal, later released a terse statement in which she not only confirmed the authenticity of the story but also called for prayers for the quick recovery of the former Speaker
The statement read in part thus, “The member representing Esan West/Igueben federal constituency, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobu has asked for prayers from his constituents and other well-meaning people for his healing”.
The statement was, however, silent on the cause of the accident as well as where the former Speaker was headed when the incident occurred.

However, an insider who is privy to the travel plans of the former Speaker told Borderline News24 that the lawmaker missed his flight to Abuja and opted to go by road through the notoriously unmotorable Auchi – Ekpoma express road.
He added that the SUV he was seated in during the trip was a total wreck, thanking God, however, that his life was spared.
