‎IWD 26; Edo Highlights Commitment to Women’s Empowerment‎‎



‎Edo State has joined the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8. This year’s theme is “Rights. Justice. Action.”

‎State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, addressed a press conference attended by stakeholders , emphasizing the administration’s commitment to advancing women’s welfare, protection, and empowerment.

‎According to Aballah, Edo State under Governor Monday Okpebholo’s leadership has demonstrated strong dedication to promoting inclusion, protection, and opportunities for women, children, and vulnerable groups.

‎Abdallah highlighted achievements of the Okpebholo administration, aligning with the UN’s call to accelerate progress toward gender equality and ensure women’s rights are protected and respected .
‎They include amongst others

‎- Strengthening protection against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through improved coordination and awareness campaigns
‎- Establishing a Sexual Assault Referral Centre
‎- Economic empowerment programs for women, including vocational training and entrepreneurship support
‎- Support for vulnerable groups, such as children, persons with disabilities, and the elderly
‎- Partnerships with development organizations to promote gender equality and social inclusion
‎- Encouraging women’s participation in leadership and decision-making roles

‎The government aims to continue promoting women’s empowerment and social development in the state.

‎Some of lined up activities to mark the day includes, a  health and awareness walk to promote wellness and solidarity,
‎-A trade fair and exhibition showcasing products and services of women farmers and entrepreneurs and
‎a three-day empowerment training program for vulnerable women.
