The member representing Egor/ Ikpoba-Okha federal constituency of Edo state in the National Assembly, Hon. Murphy Osaro Omoruyi has added his voice to the growing condemnation of the recent bizarre attempt to introduce the title of Iyaloja into Edo State, reportedly carried out within the Festival Hall of the Edo State Government House.
According to the lawmaker, ” It is deeply troubling that Edo people woke up to this news with disbelief, especially because His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, had clearly affirmed that such a title has no place in our culture or traditions”
Hon. Omoruyi said that the disregard of this position is not only unfortunate but also a direct affront to the collective heritage. He maintained that ” the traditional institution in Edo is embodied by our revered monarch, which is the foundation of our identity. To undermine it is to tamper with the soul of our people.” he warned.
The lawmaker insisted that politics and governance must never be allowed to erode what makes us Benins and Edos.
He therefore urges His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo, to act swiftly by annulling the purported installation and ensuring that those behind it are called to account.
He said that the government must show, through decisive action, that it stands firmly with the monarch and with the traditions of Edo people.
He also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene by ensuring that all individuals—regardless of their influence or position—refrain from actions that could endanger harmony and respect among Nigeria’s diverse cultures Such actions, if unchecked, risk fueling unnecessary tensions in the society.
While urging market women in Edo State especially those of Egor and Ikpoba-Okha to remain calm and maintain the peace, the federal lawmaker said
at this critical moment, what is required is unity and firmness in defense of our traditions; advising that Edo people must stand together to protect the sanctity of the throne and the dignity of our monarch.
