The member representing Owan federal consistency, Prof Julius Ihonvbere at the National Assembly has accused the ruling people’s Democratic party,PDP, of orchestrating the ugly scene which preceded the House of Assembly election in Owan West local government.
In addition, Prof Ihonvbere described the assembly election in the Owan West council area as a sham, adding that desperate candidates deployed extreme violence against the voters to secure victory
Recall, Blessing Agbebaku of the PDP was declared the winner of the House of Assembly elections for Owan West constituency where Prof Ihonvere hails from.
The Federal Lawmaker who is Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Services made the statement in a press release made available to newsmen by his Senior Aide on Media and Public Affairs, Joshua Iraoya,.
Lamenting that the level of violence that depicted the assembly poll in his Owan West domain was “too extreme” and also “scared” the voters from freely exercising their franchise,
Prof Ihonvbere who won his second term bid during the last presidential and national assembly elections, said the victories obtained at the assembly election were “pyrrhic”, .
Prof Ihonvere blatantly accused the ruling PDP of using armed thugs to invade the polling units to disrupt and hinder the victory of the APC in its strongholds
He further opined that those who have emerged through the “flawed process” must quickly realize also that they have the moral burden to commit themselves to a better electoral process as well as come to terms with the fact that they do not command the respect and confidence of the people whom they claim to represent
While congratulating the APC members-elect for the various constituencies, Prof Ihonvbere called on the APC members in Owan West to remain calm in the face of the brazen stealing of their mandate which occurred on March 18, insisting the party leadership is taking a serious look at the events that played out to seek redress.
He described the victory of the APC candidates as “tortuous and deserved” and also praised the tenacity of the voters in the face of the adversity.
