The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has joined government officials, All Progressives Congress, APC leaders and faithful, support groups, and citizens to give a rousing welcome to the victorious Edo Queens Football Club following their outstanding triumph at the West African Football Union Zone B, WAFU-B Tournament.
The reception was in celebration of the team’s remarkable performance and victory, which has brought pride and honour to Edo State on the regional stage.
Officials and supporters at the event commended the players and technical crew for their discipline, resilience, and for flying the Edo and Nigerian flags high.
The team, which returned to the state through the Benin Airport today, was warmly received by a jubilant crowd led by government officials and supporters who gathered to celebrate the historic achievement.
Edo Queens defeated Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies Football Club 4–1 on penalties to emerge champions of the WAFU-B tournament, further cementing their status as one of the leading women’s football teams in the region.
Leading management and staff of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to the airport, the Commissioner, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, commended the players, coaches and management of Edo Queens for their exceptional performance, determination and resilience throughout the tournament.
Hon. Abdallah congratulated the team for making Edo State and Nigeria proud, describing their victory as a source of inspiration to young girls and women across the state.
According to her, the achievement demonstrates the immense talent, discipline and potential of Edo women and girls when given the right platform and support to excel.
She also congratulated the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his administration’s commitment to supporting sports development and creating opportunities for Edo youths and women to thrive.
The Commissioner noted that the success of Edo Queens goes beyond football, stressing that it represents a powerful message of female empowerment, resilience, teamwork and excellence.
She urged the players to remain focused and continue to serve as positive role models for young girls across Edo State and Nigeria.
Immediately after the colourful airport reception, the victorious team proceeded to the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, where they were formally received by the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, at a special reception held in their honour.
The Governor’s reception further highlighted the significance of the team’s achievement and the pride it has brought to Edo State, as government officials, supporters and other stakeholders celebrated the champions.
The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Abdallah said, would continue to support initiatives that promote the development, empowerment and advancement of women and girls in the state.
The colourful celebrations at both the Benin Airport and Government House marked another proud moment for Edo State, as the Edo Queens returned home as WAFU-B champions.
