The Department of State Services (DSS) has initiated efforts to apprehend those responsible for the brutal assault on Dr. Pedro Obaseki in Benin City earlier this month.
A suspect, Osaze Adun, popularly known as “Kapuepue”, was arraigned before an Edo State High Court on Thursday, where he was granted bail of N5 million. The DSS had requested the court to remand Adun in prison pending advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The defence team, led by Olayiwola Afolabi (SAN), argued that the case was bailable under the constitution, citing the defendant’s fundamental human rights. Afolabi acknowledged that bail was at the court’s discretion, but urged the judge to grant it .
Justice R.A. Ogbevoen, who presided over the case, ruled that Adun must appear in court every last Friday of the month pending the DPP’s advice. The court also ordered the suspect to provide a surety, a civil servant of grade level 12 or above, resident within the court’s jurisdiction.
