The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in collaboration with the Office of the Edo State First Lady, hosted a women’s wellness, fitness, and health awareness programme at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
The event, part of the 2026 International Women’s Day celebrations, brought together women from across the state for physical exercises, games, health talks, and wellness activities.
Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, emphasized the importance of women prioritizing their health and wellbeing, saying they deserve to be healthy and happy.
Mrs Anani who was represented by
the Special Adviser to the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betty Okonobo, noted that the initiative reflects the commitment of the Government to promoting healthy lifestyles among women, encouraging them to embrace regular exercise, proper nutrition and routine medical check-ups as essential steps toward living healthier and more productive lives.
In her welcome remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, described the gathering as a celebration of the strength, resilience and unity of Edo women.
She stated that the keep-fit exercise was organized not only to commemorate International Women’s Day but also to promote healthy living among women in the state. “It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this exciting keep-fit exercise organized to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026. Seeing so many strong, energetic and inspiring women gathered here today truly reflects the power, unity and spirit of Edo women.”
She added that the day served as a reminder that women must also care for themselves while supporting their families and communities. “Today is not just about exercise; it is about celebrating ourselves. As women, we carry many responsibilities in our homes, workplaces, communities and in leadership. In the midst of all we do for others, today reminds us of something very important – we must also take care of ourselves.”
Mrs. Abdallah stressed that a healthy woman is a confident and productive woman whose wellbeing directly contributes to the strength and progress of society.
“When women are healthy and strong, our families, our communities and our state become stronger. That is why this keep-fit exercise is so important. It reminds us that staying active, keeping fit and prioritizing our wellbeing should be part of our daily lives. When we move our bodies, we energize our minds, uplift our spirits and build the strength needed to keep breaking barriers and achieving greatness”.
The Commissioner expressed delight at seeing women from different walks of life come together in the spirit of celebration, solidarity and empowerment, noting that the essence of international women’s day is about promoting unity, strength and progress among women.
Mrs Abdallah concluded by encouraging women to continue supporting one another and inspiring the younger generation. “As we exercise today, let us celebrate the resilience of Edo women, support one another, and continue to inspire the next generation of girls to dream big and live healthy, fulfilling lives. Let today remind us that our health is our wealth and strong women build strong societies”.
The Chief Medical Director of the Edo State Specialist Hospital, Dr. (Mrs.) Anthonia I. Njoku, delivered a lecture titled “Women’s Wellness Across the Lifespan: Understanding Menopause and Healthy Ageing.” Dr. Njoku explained that women face different health challenges at various stages of life, noting that understanding the physical and hormonal changes that occur over time is essential to maintaining good health. She emphasized the importance of awareness and proper education to help women effectively manage these changes and promote healthier ageing.
