At a time when many Nigerians are searching for reassurance amid economic and social pressures, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, used the solemn yet celebratory setting of the 2025 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols to deliver a message anchored on love, unity and renewed hope, values he described as central to both the Christmas season and his administration’s SHINE agenda.
The event, held at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City, brought together top government officials, lawmakers, jurists, religious leaders and citizens in a blend of worship, reflection and cultural expression. More than a festive gathering, the programme served as a platform for the Governor to restate his thoughts on governance, security and the collective future of Edo State.
Delivering the Ninth Lesson and his Christmas message, Governor Okpebholo drew inspiration from Isaiah chapter nine, verses two to three, a passage that speaks of light shining in darkness and joy replacing despair. He said the scripture perfectly captures the spirit of Christmas and the direction Edo State is heading under his leadership.
The Governor expressed strong optimism about the year ahead, declaring that 2026 would be a year of rejoicing for Edo people. He reassured residents that his administration remains firmly committed to the protection of lives and property, stressing that security remains a non-negotiable pillar of governance.
In a deeply symbolic moment, Governor Okpebholo invoked the blood of Jesus as a covering over Edo State, describing it as a sign of divine protection and peace. For many in attendance, the gesture reflected a leadership style that openly connects faith, morality and public service, especially at a time when citizens crave stability and direction.
The Nine Lessons and Carols programme itself echoed these themes. Through scripture readings, hymns and choir ministrations, the story of the birth of Jesus Christ was retold as one centred on love, sacrifice and hope for humanity. Various visiting choirs, including the Edo State Public Service Choir, delivered spirited performances that filled the hall with music and reflection, while cultural and dance presentations added colour and warmth to the evening.
One of the most anticipated moments of the night was the raffle draw, a highlight that underscored the administration’s emphasis on inclusive celebration and practical gestures of goodwill. Osifo Solomon emerged as the grand prize winner, going home with a mini-bus. Other prizes included a tricycle, a sewing machine, sets of cooking pots, DSTV decoders and a courier service motorcycle. For many beneficiaries, the gifts were more than items; they were tangible reminders of a government seeking to share in the people’s joy during the Yuletide season.
The event attracted an array of dignitaries, reflecting its significance on the State’s calendar. Among those present were the Chief Judge of Edo State, Hon. Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa; Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere; Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Sheriff Agbebaku; Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq.; the Edo State Deputy Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Sylvester Aigboboh; members of the State Executive Council; lawmakers; permanent secretaries; judges of the Edo State Judiciary; heads of ministries, departments and agencies, as well as religious and community leaders.
Beyond the carols and celebrations, Governor Okpebholo’s broader Christmas message to Edo people reinforced the same core ideas. In his official 2025 Christmas address, he described the season as a time of love, sacrifice, peace and renewed hope, urging citizens to reflect on the values of selflessness, compassion and unity that the birth of Christ represents.
He noted that Christmas offers families and communities an opportunity to come together in harmony and to reach out to the less privileged and vulnerable members of society. According to him, peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and tolerance across religious and ethnic lines are essential for the State’s progress.
The Governor expressed gratitude to Edo people for their continued support, cooperation and patience as his administration works to deliver good governance and sustainable development across all sectors. He reaffirmed his commitment to the SHINE agenda, which focuses on improving security, infrastructure, healthcare, education and economic opportunities for all residents of the State.
“As we celebrate Christmas, let us renew our faith in a better Edo State built on unity, hard work and shared prosperity,” the Governor said. “My administration remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach every corner of our State.”
He also urged residents to celebrate responsibly during the festive period and to observe safety measures, while offering prayers for peace, progress and prosperity in Edo State and Nigeria as a whole.
As the final hymns were sung and the candles dimmed, the message from the Governor was unmistakable. For Senator Monday Okpebholo, Christmas is not just a seasonal ritual; it is a reminder that love must guide leadership, unity must define society, and hope must shape the future. Through the SHINE agenda, he signalled, Edo State is being positioned to move forward with light, purpose and people at the centre of governance.
