FRSC moves to curb increasing truck accidents in Edo

The Edo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has partnered with truck and trailer drivers as part of efforts aimed at reducing increasing rate of truck and trailer accident on the road.

Speaking at a town hall meeting with the drivers and other stakeholders, the State Sector Commander, Cyril Mathew said the event is in line with FRSC directives to commands nationwide on the need to stem the increasing rate of Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) involving Tanker and Trailer drivers to reduce it to the barest minimum.

Stakeholders at the meeting with the Theme: “Safe Loading and Driving of Tankers and Trailers in Edo State” include, Chairman Petroleum Tanker Driver Edo chapter, Comrade Matthew Ogbomo, Chairman Edo State Tipper Association, Representative of Special Marshals, Representative of Federal Fire Service Controller, Zone 8 Commander, Edo State Traffic Mgt Agency (EDTSMA)h, among others.

Mathew emphasized that the major focus of the meeting with tanker and trailer drivers was to deliberate, interact and proffer possible ways to reduce road accident involving wet and dry cargo to the barest minimum in Edo state in particular and Nigeria at large.

He stressed the need for NUPENG/PTD to ensure that only licensed and more experienced tanker drivers are allowed to drive in order to curb accident especially when transporting petroleum products.

He advised dried cargo drivers to always latch containers and avoid carrying human beings and animals together.

He highlighted the efforts of the FRSC through training and posting some personnel, who check the status of tankers in Tank farms while loading and that of dry cargo at Apapa Wharf to ensure minimum Safety Standards and Road worthiness of all vehicles before loading.

The Sector Commander howevwr assured the drivers of continuous collaboration and highlighted the efforts by the FRSC in ensuring regular road audits and conveying such reports to ministries and agencies saddled with such responsibilities of fixing the roads.

Earlier, the drivers appealed to Federal Govt to carry out more palliative measures on the roads for safe driving noting that there are lots of bad potholes which poses a great threats to them.

They however sought for more collaboration with FRSC.
