Edo State is set to hold its next local government election in July 2026.

This announcement was made by the chairman of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDOSIEC), Hon. Jonathan Aifuobhokhan during a press briefing in Benin, the Edo State capital.

Flanked by other Commission members, Hon. Aifuobhokhan stated that the local government election is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2026, across all 18 local government areas of the state.

He emphasised that the Commission will adhere strictly to the existing laws to conduct the election.

Specifically, he mentioned that Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act of 2022 empowers the Commission to oversee local government elections.

He also referenced other sections of the law to support his statements, noting that, both the 2012 Edo State Local Government Electoral Law and the amended 2022 Edo State Independent Electoral Commission Establishment Law, granted the Commission the authority to issue a notice for the election.

As it stands, the incumbent council chairpersons will serve an additional year in office before the upcoming elections.

However, it remains uncertain whether the state government will permit the current chairpersons to run for re-election.

Recall, Gov Monday Okpebholo sought suspension of incumbent chairpersons and deputies elected under the Godwin Obaseki’s administration shortly after taking office, citing insubordination.

The suspension was declared illegal by the Attorney-General of the Federation; subsequent impeachment attempts led to protracted court battles

The incumbent chairpersons who were initially elected as councillors during the Obaseki’s administration will complete the tenure of the suspended chairmen.
