Edo High Court Reinstates 18 Suspended LG Chairmen, Deputies

‎The Edo State High Court sitting in Benin has ordered the immediate reinstatement of the 18 local government councils chairmen and their deputies, who were suspended by the Edo State Government.

‎The ruling, delivered Friday,  December 20, 2024 by Justice Efe Ikponwonba, followed a lawsuit filed by the affected council chairmen and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Edo State.

‎The court issued a restraining order against the Edo State Government, the Governor, the state Attorney General and other key defendants, preventing them from implementing the resolution passed by the Edo State House of Assembly on December 16, 2024.

‎The resolution sought to suspend the local government chairmen and their deputies, a move the court deemed unlawful and lacking sufficient legal justification.

‎Justice Ikponwonba further granted an order of mandamus, instructing all parties involved to maintain the status quo as of December 12, 2024, when the lawsuit was initially filed.
