Members of the Obidient Movement, known supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi, were formally received into the Edo State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at a ceremony held at the party’s state secretariat in Benin City.
Political observers note that the mass movement of supporters has significantly weakened the Labour Party in the state, describing it as now reduced to a “carcass” with much of its grassroots appeal lost to the ADC
Receiving the defectors, Edo ADC State Chairman, Hon. Kennedy Odion, reminded the large gathering of youths that the event would be “mere emotional exercise” if it did not translate into building the party from the grassroots, ward, and unit levels.
He urged them to register at their respective wards to strengthen the party’s base.
Also speaking, former Edo State Governor and APC National Leader, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, told the crowd that a “New Nigeria is indeed possible,” noting that the nation’s wealth of youth intellect and energy could drive change. He encouraged the Obedient members to stay focused, asking, “Are you ready for what it takes to change and rescue Nigeria?” He likened the ruling APC to a “failed workman,” adding, “What do you do with a failed workman? You _change_ them.”
The movement was officially welcomed into the ADC with the presentation of party membership cards to their representative, Comrade Asemota Igiogbe, on behalf of the entire Obedient members in Edo State.
Comrade Asemota Igiogbe, speaking on behalf of the Obedient Movement, expressed gratitude to the National Leader, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, the State Chairman, Hon. Kennedy Odion, members of the State Executive Committee, and all who made the historic occasion possible. He pledged total commitment to the ADC by all Obedient members.
Responding to cynical remarks from members of the ruling APC, who alleged that the group was joining the ADC with a “do-or-die” mentality to cause disruption, Comrade Igiogbe firmly denied such intentions. He stated that their purpose was to help build a formidable opposition that would unite to rescue Nigeria.
He emphasized that the same tenacity of purpose that drove the movement in 2023 now propels them into the ADC, which they see as the only party that shares their vision of a New Nigeria. “During elections, we will vote and defend our votes,” he declared.
