Assassination Attempt on Obi, Edo ADC Leaders: Hon. Omoruyi Calls for Thorough Investigation

The member representing Egor/ Ikpoba-Okha federal constituency of Edo state and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Honourable Murphy Osaro Omoruyi , has condemned in strong terms the co-ordinated attempt to assassinate prominent opposition leaders including former Labour Party Presidential candidate , His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi and other ADC stalwarts at the residence of the former governor of Edo state and national leader of the party, Chief John Odigie – Oyegun in Benin City on Tuesday, February 24th, 2026.
Hon. Omoruyi, a chieftain of the ADC who also was among the opposition leaders at the gathering, expressed shock at the magnitude of the attack,
which he described as wicked and vicious.
The federal lawmaker emphasised that freedom of association as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution is the hallmark of democracy and enjoined law enforcement agents to diligently investigate the Tuesday debacle and bring the perpetrators to book.
Reliving his near – death experience, the ADC chieftain condemned the act thus, “This is a direct assault on democracy and a dangerous escalation of political intolerance. It’s not only aimed at the opposition but also at the very foundation of the nation’s democratic values”.
The federal lawmaker who said the Tuesday show of shame adds to the series of unrelenting harassment and attacks melted out to the opposition in Edo State quarried why Edo State has become a haven for violence, thuggery and rascality.
Speaking further, he said, “This is not just an attack on Peter Obi or Chief Odigie – Oyegun, it’s an attack on Nigeria’s democratic values. Political differences must never be allowed to degenerate into violence.”
While urging the ADC leaders, members, supporters , and the Obidient Movement not to be deterred by the dastardly act, Hon. Omoruyi tasked the Nigeria Police and othe security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the incident, stressing that swiftly bringing the culprits to justice would boost citizens’ confidence in the police .
Recall that on Tuesday the 24th day of February 2026, armed men stormed the house of the former governor of Edo state and national leader of the ADC, Chief John Odigie- Oyegun venue of the meeting of the opposition figures and shot sporadically at the gathering.
Also at the meeting was the latest defector to the ADC , Mr. Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata the Edo State Labour Party gubernatorial candidate in the 2024 election.
