Former Edo State Deputy Governor, Omobayo Marvellous, has reportedly put his senatorial ambition for Edo North district on the platform of African Democratic Congress, ADC on hold and opened discussions with Senator Adams Oshiomhole, his expected opponent in the race.
Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, who hails from Akoko Edo LGA, was appointed Deputy Governor of Edo State by the Godwin Obaseki administration in April 2024. His appointment came after Philip Shaibu was impeached by the Edo State House of Assembly.
Shaibu later had the impeachment annulled by a Federal High Court in July 2024, which declared his removal unconstitutional and ordered his reinstatement.
The political situation remained contentious until the end of Obaseki’s tenure in November 2024.
Sources said Omobayo visited Oshiomhole at his Abuja residence for a closed-door meeting on issues relating to reviving his political career. Oshiomhole, the former Edo governor and current APC leader in Edo North, is widely regarded as the frontrunner for the senatorial seat.
The move has reportedly caught Omobayo’s new party, the African Democratic Congress, ADC, off guard, with party insiders describing it as a betrayal.
According to sources, Oshiomhole offered to back Omobayo for the House of Representatives seat for Akoko Edo Federal Constituency after hours of discussion. Omobayo was said to have declined the offer, stating that it was below his political standing given his recent position as deputy governor.
Oshiomhole is said to have noted Omobayo’s concerns and offered alternative support, including assistance with legal issues involving both the Edo State government and Philip Shaibu.
The only condition attached was that Omobayo drop his senatorial ambition and align with Oshiomhole’s political structure.
There are indications that Omobayo may formally defect to the APC during the party’s flag-off event.
Efforts to reach Omobayo and ADC officials for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.
