The remains of Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah, killed by terrorists in Benisheikh, Kaga LGA of Borno State, were laid to rest on Wednesday at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri.
The burial in Borno denied his kinsmen in Warrake, Owan East LGA of Edo State, and other Edo residents the chance to pay their last respects.
Before his death, Braimah was Commander of the 29 Task Force Brigade, Operation HADIN KAI.
He was killed in a coordinated Boko Haram attack on his base in Benisheikh.
While family and friends in Warrake and across Edo had expected his remains to be brought home, news broke that he had been buried in Maiduguri in line with military tradition.
Under Nigerian military tradition, fallen soldiers who die in active service are typically interred with full military honours in dedicated cemeteries near the theatre of operations or at designated national sites.
Key burial locations for fallen heroes include the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri, frequently used for troops killed in the North-East insurgency; the National Military Cemetery in Abuja, reserved for high-ranking officers or special cases; and the Guards Brigade Cemetery, also in Abuja, for personnel serving in the capital.
General Braimah and other casualties of the attack were buried at Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery.
The ceremony was attended by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum; Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; and other senior military officers who gathered to honour the fallen.
“Amidst grieving families and fellow comrades, the fallen heroes were accorded full military honours in recognition of their selfless service and unwavering commitment to the defence of the nation,” an Army statement read.
