Edo State Government has expressed its commitment to tackling street begging in collaboration with Arewa community leaders, religious institutions, and traditional rulers.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, emphasized the need for rehabilitation, protection, and empowerment of individuals on the streets, rather than just clearing them.

During a courtesy visit to Arewa leaders and the Chief Imam of Benin City Central Mosque, Abdallah highlighted the harsh realities faced by people on the streets, including neglect, exploitation, and abuse.

She stressed that the government’s approach goes beyond clearing streets, focusing on unlocking the potential of affected individuals through education and skill development.

Traditional and religious leaders welcomed the initiative, pledging their support and cooperation. Alhaji Badamasi Saleh, Chairman of the Arewa Community, who also doubles as
the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Edo State Governor on Arewa Security Matters, and Alhaji Abdulfatai Enabulele, Chief Imam of Benin City Central Mosque, emphasized the need for sustained collaboration to address street begging, citing social and religious principles.
