A 41-year-old furniture maker, Mr. Aruna Imuekheme from Ikabigbo Uzairue in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, was beaten to death by 11 suspected gang members in Benin City.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at his workshop along Old Ahor Road, Eyean, in Uhunmwode Local Government Area.
The motive behind the attack appears to be a dispute over a job Mr. Imuekheme had completed about six months prior.
A client had returned, demanding that the chairs be fixed again, claiming the foam used had compressed. Mr. Imuekheme’s brother, Lukeman, explained that the agreement was only to cover the chairs with new fabric, not replace the foam.
The suspected gang members, who arrived in two groups, including three in a Toyota Venza SUV, allegedly attempted to cart away Mr. Imuekheme’s tools and belongings when they found him absent. A scuffle ensued when apprentices and residents resisted.
He stated that the incident escalated into a violent attack on Mr. Imuekheme, who was alerted and rushed back to the workshop, only to be confronted by the hoodlums
The hoodlums reportedly overpowered and beat him to stupor
Mr. Imuekheme was rushed to several hospitals but was declined admission. He was later pronounced dead at Edo Specialist Hospital at about 12:08 pm. His body was deposited at Stella Obasanjo Mortuary in Benin City.
The Edo State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the case.
The family is calling for a thorough investigation and justice
