Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, a state-owned institution, is currently shrouded in an atmosphere of uncertainty and relative calm, stemming from the prolonged appointment process for a substantive Vice Chancellor.

According to sources, the University’s Governing Council has concluded the selection process, submitting three top candidates’ names to the Governor, who serves as the Visitor to the University. However, stakeholders claim the Governor is under pressure to select an Esan candidate, which has led to delays.

Some stakeholders, including two prominent socio-cultural groups, Esan People’s Progressive Union (EPPU) and Ibhioje Progressive Union (IPU), have urged the Governor to prioritize merit over tribal considerations. Despite being of Esan extraction, these groups advocate for a more inclusive approach, emphasizing the importance of excellence and competence in the appointment process.

In a joint press briefing, they stated, “We want a substantive Vice Chancellor of Esan extraction, but in the present circumstance, this has eluded us. The only available reality should be embraced by all in the interest of the growth and development of the institution.”

As the university community awaits the Governor’s decision, many hope that he will prioritize merit and competence, given his track record in previous appointments.
