Those who have anxiously awaited the return of the Edo Security Network (ESN) may have to wait indefinitely.
Recent indications suggest that the formidable security outfit, established by the outgoing Obaseki administration to assist the conventional police in combating crime and illegal activities through intelligence gathering and sharing, is on the verge of being replaced by a new, independent security organization that will operate outside the control of the state government.
The activities of the ESN, commonly known as the Edo Vigilante, were banned by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, on the eve of the September 21 Edo governorship election.
During its operation, the ESN played a crucial role in ridding Edo State of outlaws and other criminal elements. However, sources within the security circles, particularly the state Police Command, suggest that the ESN may now be permanently disbanded.
A statement issued by Superintendent of Police Tijani A. Momoh, the Police Public Relations Officer for Police Zone 5, which comprises of Edo and Delta state said
the Police under the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Arungwa Nwazue Psc(+), have unilaterally decided to establish a new security outfit to replace the ESN
This much can be gleaned from the statement released by SP Tijani which stated thus, ” The AIG Zone 5 has today Monday, November 11, 2024, announced the constitution of a fresh Vigilante Group in Edo State to be known as the Edo State Police Vigilante Group”
He further stated that the Vigilante Group is expected to collaborate with the Police to ensure watertight security
He also revealed that the operational modalities of the new security group were currently being finalized and promised that details to be released shortly.
AIG Nwazue further made a strong appeal to the citizens of Edo to cooperate with both the Police and the new security group for utmost policing
The action of the AIG and, perhaps, acting on the orders of the IGP, in establishing an independent security group outside of the state government control, has sent ripples through the community, raising eyebrows among many observers.
A primary concern centres on the implications for the members of the disbanded ESN and the ongoing efforts to eliminate criminal elements from the state.
The spotlight is now on the incoming APC administration led by Senator Okpevbolo, with everyone eagerly to see his security agenda.
Will a revamped ESN be reinstated to fulfil its mission, or will the governor acquiesce and permit an independent security outfit to exert undue influence over the state’s security landscape?
