Edo Guber: Ogie, Idahosa absent at ITV Guber Debate

The battle of the running mates took place in a televised debate organized by Benin-based Independent Television (ITV) for the Edo governorship election.

Viewers across the state keenly watched as the four running mates answered a series of questions bordering on their constitutional role as well as what they intend to bring to the table in terms of service delivery and governance

However, the absence of the deputy governorship candidates of the ruling PDP, Bar Osarodion Ogie Esq, and the opposition APC, Hon Benson Idahosa, dimmed the shine of the event.

No reason was adduced for their absence but it might not be unconnected with the rivalry between the two dominant political parties in Edo State

The participating political parties included the Labour Party (LP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and the Action Alliance Congress (AAC).

The represented candidates were Alhaji Asamah Kadiri (LP), Bello Aneru (APGA), Isokpan Edith (NNPP), and Osunde Lord Osas (AAC).

Short of admitting that they are limited in their authority and cannot exceed the roles assigned to them by the constitution, the candidates unanimously stated that they are supposed to be team players and loyal deputies to the governor.

In particular, Alhaji Asamah Kadiri, the LP deputy governorship candidate who is also a SAN, said he will be a team player and will complement his principal rather than compete or pursue his own agenda.

The AAC candidate, Mrs. Isokpan, the only female deputy governorship candidate at the debate, stated that she has been working in the church for the past 17 years and, therefore, knows what it takes to be compliant and obedient to constituted authority.

She promised to be loyal and not rock the boat

The AAC and APGA candidates, on the other hand, emphasized the virtue of patience and stated that they would not force themselves on their principal.

The debate is expected to continue with the governorship candidates taking their turn .

Some of the questions asked by the deputies at the debate covered a wide range of topics including the economy, human capital development, security, and education.

In his closing remarks, the Managing Director of ITV Television and Radio, Engr. Elvis Obaseki, appreciated the courage of the deputy Governorship Candidates who took part in the debates for offering themselves to serve in that capacity.

He added that ITV/Radio wouldn’t take them for granted as they will always play their role as media organization to give them support.
