Edo Women Affairs Commissioner Seeks Stronger Ties With Police To Tackle Sexual Violence

The Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, has called for a stronger and more cordial working relationship between the ministry and the Edo State Police Command, particularly in the fight against sexual violence, defilement of minors and other forms of abuse against women and children.

Abdallah made the call when she led the Permanent Secretary and management staff of the Ministry on a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Patrick Daaor, in his office.

The Commissioner said the visit was primarily to appreciate CP Daaor for his dedication, commitment and hard work towards maintaining peace and security in Edo State since assuming office a few weeks ago.

She commended the Police Commissioner for what she described as his strategic approach to policing, noting that his meticulous and calculated handling of security matters had contributed to maintaining peace in the state, even in challenging and potentially dangerous situations.

According to her, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has a critical role to play in promoting the welfare, protection and development of women and children, making collaboration with the Police Command essential to effectively address cases of gender-based violence, sexual abuse and other forms of vulnerability.

Abdallah therefore solicited a very cordial and sustained relationship between the Ministry and the Police Command, assuring the CP of the Ministry’s readiness to work closely with the Command in advancing the protection and wellbeing of women and children across the state.

Responding, CP Patrick Daaor thanked the Commissioner and her management team for the visit and expressed the Command’s readiness to collaborate with the Ministry.

The Police Commissioner expressed concern over the increasing cases of sexual harassment and defilement of minors, describing the situation as a serious threat to the wellbeing of the society.

He assured that the Police Command would partner with the Ministry to curb the menace, stressing that the health and wellbeing of society depend largely on what happens to its people, particularly vulnerable women and children.

CP Daaor urged members of the public to report cases of sexual abuse, harassment and defilement to the Police promptly, assuring that appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the law.

The courtesy visit provided an opportunity for both institutions to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration towards the protection of women and children and the promotion of a safer Edo State.
