Omobayo Marvellous, former Deputy Governor of Edo State, is reportedly set to contest for a seat in the National Assembly under the banner of the All Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027
elections.
Given his experience as Deputy Governor, Omobayo might leverage his reputation and network to pursue the National Assembly seat.
Omobayo who hails from Akoko Edo and Engineer by profession was appointed as a deputy governor by former Governor Godwin Obaseki and sworn in on April 8, 2024 following the impeachment of Philip Shaibu.
Omobayo’s appearance at Senator Yisa Braimoh’s birthday celebration in Abuja seems to have quelled rumors of his defection to the APC. By attending the event, Omobayo demonstrated his continued allegiance to the PDP, despite earlier speculation surrounding his presence at Omosede Igbinedion’s adoption parley.
Insiders claim the former Deputy Governor feels more comfortable in the ADC, where he can build on his political experience that started in the Labour Party.”
Sources close to him suggest that he may be eyeing the Edo North senatorial seat, although he hasn’t officially declared his interest. The seat is currently held by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who hails from the Etsako area of the district, following in the footsteps of his predecessor from the same region.
Hon. Omobayo’s senatorial ambition may garner significant support from his kinsmen in Akoko-Edo and the Owan axis, given his roots and the owan agitation for rotation of the senatorial seat.
However, he may face resistance from the Etsako axis who may still be interested in having their kinsmen to continue to hold on to the senatorial seat.
This dynamic highlights the complex interplay of regional loyalties and power dynamics within Edo North’s senatorial district, comprising Akoko-Edo, Etsako, and Owan local government areas.
